Kites and Plane Cookies!

I think the two of the nicest words, both to hear and say, are

"Thank You!"

So easy, quick, straight to the point, easily understood, can't be misinterpreted....

"Thank You!!!"

My friend Mark volunteers his time to say 

"Thank You!!!"

to the city he lives in, Mission Viejo.

He coordinates a huge outdoor event, called "Up in the Air"

that showcases different vendors and sponsors throughout the city.

There's lots of free entertainment for families to watch and carnival games to try.

The remote control plane show was fabulous!!!

I know Ethan would love to try flying one of these!

I heard the dogs chasing frisbees and doing tricks were amazing!!!

Oh!  There were bubbles too!  The huge kind with kids inside!

(I wonder if they tried to put any of the dogs inside?)

And kites!!

Don't you just love kites?  I do.

Because Mark is amazing and thoughtful,

he gave these cookies to say

"Thank You!!!"

to all the people who helped say

"Thank You!!!"

to the city.

...and now I get to say 

"Thank you!!!"

to Mark.

For loving my cookies so much!

....and because I know they all would if they could...

Brushed Rainbow Cookies!

You know that acronym

"K.I.S.S."?

(keep it simple....silly)

I'm REALLY not good at that.

Ever.

If one new kind of rainbow is good......

two is FABULOUS!

When I was thinking about ruffle rainbows....I also thought about brushed rainbows!

Wait!  I know what you're thinking...

"What the heck are brushed rainbows?!  I thought these were iced cookies?

Now what's she talking about!!!"

Brushed embroidery is a technique where you pipe a thick line of stiff icing,

 then knock it down using a damp paintbrush.

It's usually used for flowers.

Ali Bee has a great tutorial!

I have....sort of a tutorial....but with rainbows instead of flowers.

I cut out large circles, cut them in half and baked.

Iced with white flood icing and let dry overnight.

I got a little nervous about fitting in all six colors so

I used a technique that Sugarbelle uses.

I measured with a ruler,

then marked the icing with a push pin, 

making holes every 1/4 inch in from the top and sides.

I used a #3 writing tip and a number 8 filbert paintbrush.

The tip was damp, but not sopping wet

After piping the half-circle with icing, just smush it towards you with the brush.

I piped the line just outside of the first line of dots, 

making sure to cover them with the red icing.

The next line was piped right where the red ended so that the colors would overlap.

Just keep going with the rainbow!!

Easy-Peasy!

After the first cookies, I didn't poke anymore holes.  

I could tell the colors would fit, 

so I just used the previous cookie as a guide.

Then,  of course, we needed more clouds.

Hearts are very important.

Can't blow these out!!!

We MUST have plenty of sixes!

Can't let anyone forget how grown up Paige has gotten!!!

Rainbow Ruffle Cookies!

Its officially rainbow season!

One of my favorite people, Paige, is turning six!!!

Last year she had a Disney Princess party....

which I made waaaay too many cookies for....

then those cookies turned into a blog....

THIS year its a Rainbow Party!!

When I heard a few weeks ago that she had chosen a rainbow party, I thought, 

"Oh that's great!  I haven't made those before, 

and I don't think I've seen too many of those around either...." 

...ahem.

Then the St. Patrick's Day craftiness exploded all over the place and

I saw more rainbow cookies than I could count!

All of them super cute, I might add.

So what's a cookie lady to do...

I wanted to make something I hadn't made before, and that I hadn't seen yet.

Hmmm....what do little girls love just as much as rainbows!

RUFFLES!!!

Here we go!

(I'm trying this tutorial business again...)

I do not own a rainbow cutter, and because of the rainbow explosion I mentioned earlier, 

there aren't any to be found...

I used the largest circle cutter from my set, and the littlest cutter to cut a hole in the center.

It looked just like a donut, then I cut it in half!  

Voila!  Rainbow!  

I added two heart shaped clouds for fun.

I outlined the hearts with a number 2 tip and let that dry.

Here's one with the regular cloud shape.

Someday....someday....I will remember to take all the in between pictures!

I used a number 101 tip and icing a little bit stiffer than piping consistency.

Being right-handed, I started on the left side and just....went for it...

My icing should have been a bit stiffer I think, and maybe a larger tip...

(I like to think about what I would do different the next time.)

Since I had six rainbows to do, first I did all the red, then all the orange and so on,

giving the previous color just enough time to start crusting a bit.

They were done in no time!

This is my new favorite cookie to make!

(until I make the next new cookie...)

Six is a pretty big birthday, don't you think?

Closer to ten, more than half a decade old!

That deserves more than one type of rainbow....

right?
