The Heart of the Matter...

I need a little help.
One of my goals for the year is improving my food photography.

You would think it would be easy to take pictures of cookies.

They don't move around.

They don't blink.

They don't squint if the sun is in their eyes.

They are incredibly patient and are GREAT at holding still!
(ok, it's not very hard at all)

But after awhile, things can get a bit monotonous.

So I'd like to add a little variety...
Y'know, spice things up a bit!

For example...in this picture I stacked them on top of each other a bit
and zoomed in pretty close.

There's also something going on behind those great big hearts...

Little bitty hearts!
I added a background!!

I'm waaaaay out of my comfort zone here people,
on a ledge...

So here's where I need your help....

Do you like that last picture, up close and personal?

Or this next one, a little further back and with the little vignette thingies on the corners?

How 'bout those little bitty hearts?

Do you like the background?

Or plain white?

I think I'll stop there...I sound like the eye doctor...

So what do you think folks?

Up close?  Corner thingies?  Background or no background?

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

(please be gentle...)

Thanks for stopping by,

Lizy B

  1. I like ALL the pics... but I'd like a cookie best:@)

  2. I like all of the pictures too, but I favor the up close with no background. That way the cookies are the focus. I still can't believe how perfect your icing is!

  3. For these cookies, I like the straight down shot the best (maybe without the dark corners). I think the close up shot looks best with the tiny heart background and the backed off shots look best with plain white.

  4. I like the background of the tiny hearts. Not sure that my lame eye can even tell the difference about the corners.

  5. I agree. The shots are all great, but I think the last pic, the cookies on a white background give center-stage to the cookies. I can concentrate on how wonderful each one looks and how much I would like to eat all of them--or at least one of them.

  6. I like the 2nd pic from the start, where they are close up and personal, leaning on each other, with the little heart background. The funky corner shots with the hearts background made my eyes go ziggy, and the white it kindof bright. I personally like to see a little cookie edge in the shots, cuz then you can see the thickness and color difference. Of course, all your cookies are always beautiful, no matter how you take the shot, but these look especially nice today! Yummy!

  9. this was a great post..I have wanted to ask opinions on my photos and different angles etc for a long time. So here is my 2 cents...I like them all..really..it is b/c your COOKIES are FANFABULOUS!!! That is fantastic and fabulous in a word I made up. In other news, if I had to pick I would go w/ the white background simply b/c your cookies are then the primary focus. You are great - thx for linking up. I know you have a lot of choices for link parties and to support me means a lot! TS

  10. The cookies are beautiful! Of course - I have no photography experience what so ever :) I take my pictures with my iphone! But I like the close up picture of the 3 cookies the best and I like a white background the best. Whenever I take a picture I always thing I have to get the whole picture, not cut anything out. but when I look at pictures I like they are rarely of the whole dessert. In the 2nd picture you can't see all of the cookies but it gives you a great view at their beauty and it is my favorite!

  11. I think that all of the pictures are great, but I like the second and third one the best. It shows off the cookies the best, with or without black faded corners. I like the corners, because it makes them more elegant. Good job!!

  12. You know what!?
Of course, everybody has something to say...
In my country they say "how many houses, so many habits"...
    you are an artist! no doubdt for this;
you'll find alone, the best way to take a shot for each kind of cookies you have. I'll bet for this.
The cookies will help you a lot!!

  13. All of these photos look great! I think it's good to have a mix of ranges and composition, and I like both the white and patterned backgrounds, but I'm not a huge fan of the vignette style - it takes some focus away from the cookies themselves (and that would be a shame!!)

  14. I like seeing all angles, the more pictures the better! love the printed backgrounds. I like the corners too but only when it makes sense for the shape of the cookies or set of cookies that you are photographing. also, i love the wet-on-wet hearts border on the cookies--def using that on upcoming hearts of my own!!

  15. I usually like seeing more than one view, especially if the subject matter is really pretty. Those cookies are SO cute and all the picture are great.

If I had to choose just one, then the the next to the last one. Love the close-up and the position of the cookies.
